When should I turn in my PhD application?
A good starting point to aim for is about 18 months before you would start the program, or 6–9 months before the applications are due. Research programs and prepare for any required standardized tests in the early stages of the process. Plan to submit your work at least a year in advance if you want to have an article accepted for publication before you finish your graduate program and start interviewing for jobs. Sometimes getting a paper accepted can take up to three years.
